Backtesting in trading: test your strategy risk-free
Backtesting lets you test a trading strategy on historical data before risking a single euro. Done well, it turns a hunch into a verified method. This guide explains what backtesting is, why it's essential, how to do it properly, and how EloTrades' candle-by-candle replay helps you improve far faster than a plain demo account.
What is backtesting in trading?
Backtesting means applying a trading strategy to past market data to see how it would have performed. You replay history, make the decisions you'd have made live, and measure the outcome: win rate, risk/reward ratio (R:R), cumulative profit or loss.
It's a risk-free test bench: no live position, no capital at stake. The goal isn't to predict the future, but to check that a method makes statistical sense and to practise executing it correctly.
Why backtest your strategy?
Backtesting before trading live lets you:
- Validate (or reject) a strategy over many trades, without risking money.
- Repeat hundreds of situations in a few hours — impossible in real time.
- Sharpen execution discipline: entries, stop-loss, take-profit, position management.
- Build the confidence to follow your plan when money is on the line.
- Compare several approaches over the same periods, backed by numbers.
Manual, replay or automated backtest?
Automated (coded) backtesting tests a mechanical strategy over thousands of candles in a second, but it doesn't teach you to execute. Replay backtesting replays the market candle by candle: you make each decision yourself, just like live, training both your method AND your mindset.
For a discretionary trader, replay is the most instructive: it combines speed (you advance when you want) and realism (you can't see the future). That's the EloTrades approach.
How to backtest effectively?
A simple, honest method for usable results:
- Define clear rules BEFORE you start (entry, stop, target, management).
- Hide the future: never advance the candles before deciding — otherwise you fool yourself.
- Test on a large enough sample (at least several dozen trades).
- Journal every backtest trade like a real one: screenshot, R:R, note.
- Then analyse your stats by pair, method and session to adjust.
EloTrades replay: train like it's live
EloTrades includes a replay backtest engine built for improvement:
- Candle-by-candle replay across 41 instruments (forex, indices, crypto, metals).
- 14 timeframes, from M1 to 3 months.
- Clickable SL / TP right on the chart, draggable positions.
- Drawing tools (trendlines, Fibonacci, channels…).
- Automatic journaling in a dedicated backtest journal.
Replay backtest or demo account?
A demo account trades in real time: realistic, but slow — you have to wait for setups. Replay backtesting replays history at your own pace, so you can train much faster.
| Demo account | EloTrades replay | |
|---|---|---|
| Training speed | Real time (slow) | Accelerated (months in one session) |
| Data | Live market | Real history replayed |
| Replay the same period | No | Yes |
| Accidentally seeing the future | Impossible | Blocked (candle by candle) |
| Journaling | Manual | Built in |
Backtesting — frequently asked questions
What is backtesting in trading?+
Backtesting means testing a strategy on past market data to measure how it would have performed, without risking money. With EloTrades you replay history candle by candle and make your decisions just like live.
Does backtesting guarantee future profits?+
No. A backtest measures the past, and past performance doesn't guarantee future results. Its value is to validate a method's logic and train your execution, not to promise returns. It's an analysis and training tool, never a guarantee.
How do you backtest a strategy on EloTrades?+
Pick an instrument and a period, start the replay, and advance candle by candle while placing your entries, stop-loss and take-profit right on the chart. Each trade is saved automatically in your backtest journal to analyse afterwards.
How many trades should you backtest?+
The larger the sample, the more reliable your stats: aim for at least several dozen trades across varied market conditions. A small number of trades gives misleading numbers.
What's the difference between backtesting and a demo account?+
A demo account trades in real time (slow); replay backtesting replays history at your pace — you can condense months of practice into one session. Replay is far more efficient for repeating and correcting.
Does EloTrades offer free backtesting?+
Yes, the free plan includes trial access to backtesting (limited launches); the Elite plan unlocks unlimited backtesting and replay across all 41 instruments.
Is backtest data reliable?+
The historical data in EloTrades' backtest is provided by Dukascopy Bank SA for informational purposes: it reflects an independent assessment and doesn't represent the exact values at any given moment, nor investment advice. It is more than enough to practise, test a method and build discipline. The goal of backtesting is training, not tick-perfect reproduction.
